Jodo Gyan Workshop

“Life as a teacher begins the day you realize that you are always a learner”

Ms. Sapna Tuteja and Ms. Priyanka Bhatia attended a workshop on ‘Mathematical Tools for Meaningful Pedagogical Practices’ organised by Jodo Gyan Resource Centre, New Delhi from November 29, 2017 to December 2, 2017.

The workshop commenced with the introduction of the resource person, Mr E. K Shahji and his innovative ways to reach out to the students and transform the way they learn with the designed curriculum and tools of Jodo Gyan. The teachers were encouraged to use various new ways to teach Math like juggling of numbers for addition and subtraction using fractions kit , digit cards game, beads for counting, half and skip counting, games for multiplication, taming the table, jodo straws game for 2 D and 3 D geometry, decimals and many more.

The objective of the workshop was to change abstract mathematical learning to concrete learning. As the children learn better with what they touch, feel and observe, hands on experience was emphasized upon. Illuminating pedagogical ways to teach Mathematics at the Primary level were discussed and pondered upon. Numerous activities were carried out by the resource team using Jodo Gyanmaterial Beads, Ragnometry, Blocks, Dice etc.

The workshop was not only educative but thought provoking. It provided the teachers an insight into innovative teaching methodologies and led them to introspect and adopt the new and better ways to reach out to the children. They were asked to adopt methods to teach the students in ways that not only enhance their learning but enable them to retain the concepts forever. The traditional way of rote learning was advised to be replaced by teaching by experimenting, to suit the changing times and abide by the need of the hour.

The teachers never stop learning. This workshop provided yet another opportunity to the teachers to learn something new and implement the same while teaching their young children. It was a great learning experience which would not only be beneficial for the teachers but the students as well.
